UNION, NJ - Family and friends gathered together on Saturday to celebrate the 100th birthday of longtime Union resident Mary Izzo .

Izzo was born on July 17, 1924.  She moved from Newark to Union in 1965.  She raised five children and became a consummate volunteer, including as the town's Girl Scout troop organizer, as the leader of Troop 588 for twenty years, and as a Washington Rock Girl Scout delegate.  She also provided invaluable input as a member of the executive board for a local PTA.

Izzo held the posts of First Vice Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, Financial Secretary for the Court of the Immaculate Heart, and program chairperson for Service to Youth Groups, as well as serving on a variety of charitable organizations and as an active member of St. Michael's parish as part of the Kitchen Committee and a CCD teacher.

After raising her children, at the age of 61, Izzo took a full-time job at Overlook Hospital, where she comforted countless patients for more than two decades before retiring at age 84.  She then completed the arduous study necessary to become a member of the third order of the Holy Rose Fraternity-Lay Dominicans in Summit.
