Milaca City Council briefs: meeting Sept. 19

The Milaca City Council conducted the following business during the meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19. Written by Chloe Smith.

    Consent agenda

The Milaca City Council approved the following items on its consent agenda:

    - A lawn mowing assessment for a property on Third Avenue Northwest in the amount of $405.

    - A 2024 liquor, tobacco and THC license for Fire House Bar & Grill to be located where Jiggers is currently located on Central Avenue.

    Updated ordinances

The Milaca City Council reviewed and introduced an ordinance to add mobile food units, or food trucks, to its current ordinance on peddlers, solicitors, and transient merchants. In doing so, the city hopes to ensure that all food trucks serving food in the Milaca area will be vetted with background checks, proof of insurance, and proof of MN Department of Health or Department of Agriculture licensing. The ordinance will also prevent food trucks from selling food within 150 feet of another restaurant within the city, and from selling food unauthorized at special events hosted in Milaca. After introducing those amendments, the council also introduced changes to its fee schedule to include food truck license and fees. For five consecutive days it will cost $50, for six months it will cost $100, and for a yearly permit it will cost $200. The final vote on these changes is expected to take place at the October city council meeting.

    Gorecki Center acoustic panels

The Milaca City Council approved the purchase and installation of more acoustic panels inside of the Gorecki Center in Rec Park to help with echoing inside the building when large groups of people are present. The cost of the panels is $2,578 and is expected to come from Fund 216. Council member Norris Johnson also brought up the possible use of historic photos of Milaca to be printed on canvas or another type of material alongside or in place of some of the acoustic panels to help with the aesthetics of the building while also dampening the sound. The other council members agreed with his idea and it was included in the passing of the purchase request.

    Public works payment requests

The Milaca City Council approved the following payment requests:

    - Pay request two to OMG Midwest, dba Minnesota Paving & Materials, in the amount of $190,253.65 for the city’s 2024 Street Improvement Project.

    - Pay request three to Northern Lines Contracting Inc. in the amount of $312,465.69 for the 110th Avenue Improvements Project.

    - Pay request three, final payment, to ACM LLC in the amount of $17,586.84 for the Liquor Store Access Road Project.

    Kody Nelson Eagle Scout project

Milaca resident Kody Nelson gave a presentation to the Milaca City Council about his Eagle Scout project to install cooking grills in Rec Park and Trimble Park and also requested donations from the city for the project. Nelson said that he noticed the parks did not have any cooking grills and wanted to add them for his project. He went on to say that, depending on the funds he is able to raise for the project, the grills will either be steel or stainless steel. Nelson currently has raised $1,220 but would need $2,700 for the stainless steel grills. Nelson plans to lay the concrete for the grills over MEA break and the grills will be installed a week or two later depending on the weather. Rec Park will get three grills, and Trimble Park will get one. The council told Nelson that they would review their ordinances, review state laws, and speak with the city lawyer to determine if and how they would be able to donate to his project.

    Future meeting dates

The Milaca City Council voted and changed the future council meeting dates for November, December and January due to conflicting schedules. The meetings will also still be held at 6:30 p.m. at Milaca City Hall. The meeting dates are Wednesday, Nov. 20, Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Wednesday, Jan. 15.
