UNIONDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- New York State Police rescued a dog Monday that was tied to a pole along the Southern State Parkway in Nassau County with a note from her former owner.

State troopers responding to reports of a dog tied to a light pole around 5:30 a.m. came across a 4-year-old female mastiff breed named Roxi.

She'd been tied to the pole by her leash off the westbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway, near Exit 21 in Uniondale.

Whoever abandoned her there left a bowl filled with dog food and a note, state police said.

"This is Roxi, a trained American bullmastiff," the note reads. "She is four years old. She has been fed and given a flea bath. She may still have issues with them. See that she gets good care."

The dog was taken to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, where an evaluation found she hadn't been microchipped.

It's unclear how long Roxi was tied to the pole, but she was not physically injured, according to Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin.

"There's a way to find a loving family situation for any animal," Clavin told 1010 WINS. "The last thing you should do is literally leave this dog on the side of the road to perish. Have a heart."

Clavin said Roxi is getting adjusted to the shelter and that the end goal is to make sure she finds a home.

"Roxi has been embraced by the staff already," he said. "She was a little skittish, a little nervous when she was brought in. She's calmed down and she's already had a couple of walks."

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter posted a page to track her .

State police are investigating and asking any witnesses to call (631) 756-3300.
