New FSCC Dean of Students: Vanessa Poyner
Vanessa Poyner, 46, is the new Fort Scott Community College Dean of Students as of June 11. Her office is located in the Student Services office of Bailey Hall. Poyner earned her Associate of Science from Fort Scott Community College, then a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Missouri Southern State University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Cincinnati.

Pittsburg celebrates 4th of July and 71 years of Kiddieland
PITTSBURG, Kans. — There were plenty of smiles in Pittsburg Thursday to celebrate the 4th of July. The City of Pittsburg hosted a full day of celebrations in Lincoln Park and at Kiddieland. In fact, this year marks the 71st year of Kiddieland’s existence in Pittsburg. The day began with a Firecracker 5K bright and early this morning, a car show through the lunch hour, and radio-controlled airplane demos. There were also pickleball, cornhole, and disc golf tournaments, as well as lots of people enjoying those Kiddieland rides, all in the name of “fun.”
Crews battling fire at building in west Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Friday morning, a fire damaged part of a vacant building in west Wichita. When fire crews arrived at the building near McClean Boulevard and Seneca Street, they saw flames coming from the back of the building. Investigators are now trying to determine how the fire started.
Kansas man seriously injured after Missouri boating accident on Fourth of July
WARSAW, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas family’s boating trip ended with serious injury on the Fourth of July after one man was hit by a propeller at Lake of the Ozarks. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that just before 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, emergency crews were called to mile marker 36 on the Osage arm of Lake of the Ozarks with reports of a boating accident.
Police DUI crash into house put Kansas man in jail
COWLEY COUNTY— A Kansas man was arrested after a crash into a home just before 10p.m. Wednesday in Cowley County. According to Arkansas City Police, a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Anthony Perez-Hernandez had gone through the stop sign at the intersection of North 2nd Streed and Kansas Avenue in Arkansas City and collided with the home in the 200 Block of W. Kansas Avenue.
Foundation poured for Dollar Tree in east Emporia
It isn’t paving paradise to put up a parking lot, but construction in northeast Emporia is replacing the Family Fun Center with a Dollar Tree. With the foundation recently poured, Emporia city officials confirmed basic plans for a roughly 9,800 square-foot building at 920 East 12th, between Old Rum’s Liquor and Goodcents. Point Forward tax filings raise more questions about the Pittsburg non-profit
New questions are being raised about Point Forward, a Pittsburg, Kansas, non-profit that is remodeling the former Washington School into a child care center. Point Forward was awarded more than $700,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding in 2023, but in April, it became clear that it could not receive the $705,000 as it was not a licensed childcare provider.
