(The Center Square) – A recent report on Michigan’s Child Protection Agency shows organizational issues that have been going on for at least six years. An audit completed in 2018 revealed a failure to conduct background checks, major delays in abuse investigations, failure to meet with some victims, and a lack of safety plans for identified victims. Fame blooms from Munger artist’s island scene
The annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival was held last month celebrating the flowers famous on the island. This year one local artist had a hand in promoting the festival. Emily Ryers of Munger had her artwork chosen during a contest used to create a poster promoting the Lilac Festival. Ryers beat out 74 other contestants for the opportunity to have her poster used for festival promotion. The art was also used on a beer can that was sold on the island, and the winner got $1,000. The top 20 entries were chosen by jurors based on rules for the competition. Of those top 20 the jurors then chose the winners. This wasn’t the first time that Ryers tried out for the competition either.
Caro woman avoids jail after assaults
CARO — A Caro-area woman won’t go to jail – at least for now – in connection with crimes committed in Cass City in December. Jennifer J. Zawilinski’s sentence was delayed for one year by Tuscola County Circuit Judge Amy Grace Gierhart following an alleged home invasion in Cass City on Dec. 7, 2023.
Reese teen pleads after crash with cop car
CARO — A teenage driver has pleaded no contest to a crime after police say he lost control of his vehicle on a slushy M-81, striking a police car and injuring a deputy. Deven J. Wilson, 18, of Reese pleaded no contest last week to attempted failure to use due care when passing a stationary emergency vehicle causing injury to emergency personnel.

Plans altered for school health clinic again
CASS CITY — Once again, adjustments have been made to plans Cass City Public Schools had for an in-school health clinic. Instead of hiring a nurse-practitioner to run the yet-to-be-built clinic, the district plans to use its school nurse to run the facility. The nurse will be linked to a doctor via a telehealth program.
