March / April 2023 – Hop into Spring at City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Centers
From Parks & Recreation: It may be cloudy and cold, but Spring has officially arrived and the City of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation Department is ready to celebrate the season through spring-themed special events at recreation centers across the City during March and April. Various programs are planned including egg hunts, scavenger hunts, Earth Day celebrations and more beginning Thursday, March 23, and running through Saturday, April 22.

In-person meeting: The University Community Plan Update Subcommittee will meet on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 6 p.m. at the University City High School – Media Center/Library Room located at 6949 Genesee Ave, San Diego, CA 92122. Please note that this meeting will be in-person and will focus on preparing a format for how the Subcommittee will provide feedback to the discussion draft University Community Plan.
University City Construction Alert: Genesee from 52 to Governor construction for Pure Water Pipelines begins Tuesday, March 21, 2023
Construction of the City of San Diego Pure Water Pipelines and Tunnels project in University City is continuing along Genesee Avenue from State Route 52 to Governor Drive. Construction on Genesee Avenue from State Route 52 to Governor Drive will include traffic control setup on Tuesday, March 21, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Pipeline construction in this section is expected to begin as soon as Wednesday, March 22. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 2023. Two-way traffic will be maintained, and there will be no intersection closures as part of this work.
Sat, Mar 18, noon, at North Community Library: Fire Safe Council hosts Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector Giveaway
The University City Fire Safe Council is hosting a Carbon Monoxide detector giveaway event in the parking lot at the North University City Library, 8820 Judicial Drive, on Saturday, March 18, from noon to 3 PM (or while supplies last). Recipient must live in University City and have proof of residence. There is a limit of one CO detector per household. This safety initiative is made possible by a generous grant from the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation. For more information, contact: UCFireSafeCouncil@gmail.com.
Sat, Mar 18, 10 to 11 AM: Meet and Greet with CM Kent Lee at Standley Park & Recreation Center
CM Kent Lee’s FY 2024 budget priorities include Standley Recreation Center (3585 Governor Drive) and University Community Library (4155 Governor Drive) upgrades and expansion. He will visit Standley Park to meet and greet with constituents and to take a tour of the Recreation Center and park area from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, March 18.

After the mass shooting in Half Moon Bay in January, the deplorable conditions in which farmworkers live, work and how they are paid came to national attention. One of the points that was highlighted in the subsequent media coverage was the low pay the mushroom farmworkers were receiving. In his trip to Half Moon Bay, California’s Governor saw firsthand the disgraceful working and living conditions of the farmworkers, noting that many were getting paid as little $9 an hour — well below the state minimum wage of $15.50 an hour.
