CM Kent Lee’s FY 2024 budget priorities include Standley Recreation Center (3585 Governor Drive) and University Community Library (4155 Governor Drive) upgrades and expansion. He will visit Standley Park to meet and greet with constituents and to take a tour of the Recreation Center and park area from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, March 18.

The University Community Plan serves as the 30 year vision for land use, mobility, urban design, public facilities and services, natural resources, historic and cultural resources, and economic development in the University Community Planning Area. This update plans more opportunities for homes, jobs and mixed-use development connected to the University of California San Diego, retail and employment centers, hospitals, health care facilities, residential areas, public spaces, and bus rapid and light rail stations. Proposed Smart Streetlight and ALPR Locations in University City include the intersections of Genesee and Nobel; Genesee and La Jolla Village Drive; and Nobel and Judicial.

From the Office of District Attorney Summer Stephan: Protecting Farmworkers from Criminal Wage Theft
After the mass shooting in Half Moon Bay in January, the deplorable conditions in which farmworkers live, work and how they are paid came to national attention. One of the points that was highlighted in the subsequent media coverage was the low pay the mushroom farmworkers were receiving. In his trip to Half Moon Bay, California’s Governor saw firsthand the disgraceful working and living conditions of the farmworkers, noting that many were getting paid as little $9 an hour — well below the state minimum wage of $15.50 an hour.

Monday, Feb 13, at 6 PM: Plumeria 101: Grow Amazing Plumerias in San Diego
Mike Atkinson has owned a plumeria farm on Mt Helix in San Diego’s east county with his wife Stacy for over 25 years. The PBS program “A Growing Passion” featured them on their Emmy-winning episode about plumerias. He has taught plumeria workshops in Southern California (San Diego Horticultural Society, San Diego Botanic Garden, Master Gardeners, plus many garden clubs and nurseries), all plumeria societies in the US, and the International Plumeria Conference in Florida. He is a longtime volunteer and speaker with the Southern California Plumeria Society, has authored many articles, and has been interviewed many times, including by the Los Angeles Times.
