Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Fierceness now has the inside track to translate last year's 2-year-old championship into a 3-year -old crown -- a rare feat, indeed -- thanks to his stirring victory over the year's dominant 3-year-old filly, Thorpedo Anna, in Saturday's Grade I Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

That race always is the jewel in the Saratoga crown. This year, it shone as brightly as the 2,942-karat diamond recently mined in Botswana. But the "Midsummer Derby" was only the highlight of a spectacular weekend of racing, featuring several upsets and a slew of Breeders' Cup qualifiers.

    Jumping right in:

    The 3-year-olds

Good as he is, Fierceness had never scored back-to-back wins before holding off Thorpedo Anna by a head at the end of the $1.25 million DraftKings Travers.

He had, however, won last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile by 6 1/4 lengths, the Grade I Florida Derby by 13 1/2 lengths and, in his previous start, the Grade II Jim Dandy by 1 length.

With the Travers, he now has two Grade I wins this year, which could be enough to offset in the minds of the Eclipse Award voters his fading, 15th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

In perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend, Raging Torrent refused to bow before heavily favored The Chosen Vron when the two hooked up in the stretch run of Saturday's $250,000 Grade II Pat O'Brien at Del Mar, came back after being headed and got the win.

Around the world, around the clock

    England

Saturday's Group 2 Sky Bet City of York Stakes found three double-digit outsiders -- Breege, Vafortino and Shouldvebeenaring -- finishing 1-2-3. The favorite, Audience, faded from a pace duel to finish a close fourth.

On Friday at York, Bradsell scored a "Win and You're In" berth in the Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with a 3/4-length victory over Believing in a tough renewal of the Group 1 Coolmore Wooton Bassett Stakes at 5 furlongs.
