Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Russian airstrikes Sunday on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv have injured more than 40 people, including five children, officials said.

Ukrainian regional head Oleh Syniehubov accused Moscow of "treacherously" targeting locations where "hundreds of Kharkiv residents visit every day."

He said Russia was aiming for civilian infrastructure.

This is "real terrorism!" he said on Telegram

Among the victims were five children, two medics and two first responders, he said. At least two adults and two children were in serious condition.

The Kharkiv Palace of Sports and a shopping center in the Saltiv district, near the Hydropark in the Kyiv district, were among the facilities Syniehubov said were specifically targeted.

The Ukrainian government announced the attacks on Telegram .

"Russia is once again terrorizing Kharkiv, striking civilian infrastructure and the city itself," President Volodymyr Zelensky said after the attacks. Zeensky repeated his pleas to Western nation nations and allies to ""give Ukraine everything it needs to defend itself."

Ten separate Russian strikes had been recorded, including the use of ballistic missiles, Syniehubov said. He added that people might be buried under the rubble in some areas and that rescue operations were ongoing.

"Emergency services are working, despite the threat of repeated strikes," he said.

The attack comes after Ukraine launched a wave of overnight drone attacks against targets in Russia, where fire broke out at two energy facilities.
