The emergency call came in around 5:30 a.m. EDT, and rescue officials located a burning unit in Midvale.

The only resident inside the apartment at the time was a dog, who had been in a kennel and was not responding when firefighters arrived.

However, the animal was given lifesaving CPR .

The unit's other inhabitants had been out when the fire started, but the damage is so extensive they cannot return home.

"Not all heroes wear capes," Unified Fire Authority officials wrote on social media . "Sometimes they carry leashes. Today, company 110 had the incredible opportunity to rescue a dog from a fire. Moments like these remind us how lucky we are to protect not only our community but also our furry family members. Grateful for the chance to save lives, human and animal alike."
