A'ja Wilson breaks Angel Reese's WNBA single-season rebound record

Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Angel Reese's stint as the WNBA record holder for the most rebounds in a single season lasted fewer than three weeks, with Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson surpassing the mark in a win over the Seattle Storm.

Wilson, who set the single-season scoring mark last week, logged seven rebounds to set another major record in an 85-72 triumph Tuesday in Seattle.

She entered the night with 444 rebounds, two behind Reece's previous record mark.

"It's a blessing," Wilson told reporters. "This league is tough, so if my name can be in the record books in some sort of way, it's a blessing."

Wilson made 9 of 18 shots for 21 points for the Aces. The star forward also logged two assists and a steal. The two-time WNBA MVP is averaging a career- and league-high 26.9 points per game this season. She trails only Reese (13.1) in rebounds per game (11.9).

Reese, who averaged 13.6 points per game during her rookie campaign, sustained a season-ending wrist fracture Sept. 6.

The Aces outshot the Storm 53.3% to 47.6% in Tuesday's win. They also made 45% of their 3-point attempts, compared to 22.2% from their foes. They led by as many as 18 points in their fourth-consecutive victory.

Wilson set the single-season rebounding record 5:01 into the game, collecting the board off of a missed 3-pointer from Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith.

She totaled 10 points and three rebounds through the first 10 minutes of the victory.

Veteran guard Kelsey Plum registered 21 points and seven rebounds for the Aces. She also made five 3-pointers. Aces forward Jackie Young scored 10 of her 16 points in the first half.

Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike scored 19 points.

The Aces (26-13) sit in the No. 4 spot in the WNBA standings, with just one day of regular-season games remaining. The Storm (25-15) hold the No. 5 spot.

Wilson and the Aces will face the No. 11 Dallas Wings (9-30) in their season finale at 10 p.m. EDT Thursday in Las Vegas. The Storm will play the No. 7 Phoenix Mercury (19-20) at 10 p.m. Thursday in Phoenix.
