    Below are summaries of local VFW baseball games between June 27-July 2, compiled by Nick Tabatt

    Royalton falls short to Holdingford

    The Royalton Legion baseball team had a close battle against Holdingford Thursday, June 27, but lost 1-0.

    Holdingford scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to a passed ball. Royalton loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t score a run from the effort.

    Nick Lieboild pitched seven innings, throwing five strikeouts. He allowed four hits and two walks. Sean Schmitdbauer went 1-2 at the plate and earned a walk. Both Liebold and Jake Albright went 1-3

    Patriots Sr. team wins close game against Holdingford

    The Upsala/Swanville Area Patriots Senior Legion team had a close game with Holdingford Tuesday, July 2, winning 11-9.

    The Patriots scored the first four runs in the bottom of the first inning. This includes two runs scored off a single from Hunter Moore. The Patriots scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 6-1.Holdingford took the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs. The Patriots answered, capping its scored with five more runs on six hits to regain the lead.

    The Patriots’ Caden Beseman was the winning pitcher, throwing two strikeouts in over two innings. He allowed two hits, four runs and walked two. Jonah Urman threw one strikeout in one inning, walked three and allowed five hits.

    The hard hitters who drove in two runs each were Jake Leners, Hunter Boeckermann and Hunter Moore. Beseman went 3-3 at the plate. Other Patriots with hits were Zac Johnson and Bryce Binek. The Patriots had a total of 15 hits and Holdingford had 10 hits.

    Patriots Sr. team faces tough lost to Albany

    The Upsala/Swanville Area Patriots had a tough battle with Albany Monday, July 1.

    The Patriots scored its first run from a ground out hit from Caden Beseman. Albany answered, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning and one more in the second inning to make it a 6-1 lead. The Patriots tied the game in the top of the third inning, thanks to singles hit by Jack Primus, Caden Beseman and Hunter Moore, along with an error and a ground out from Zach Gapinski. Albany scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning, with three more runs, leading 9-6. Albany capped its score, with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Primus pitched over three innings, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and throwing one strikeout. Isaac Gapinski pitched over three innings, surrendering nine runs, walked one and threw one strikeout.

    Patriots fall to Eden Valley-Watkins

    The Upsala Patriots Senior Legion team struggled against Eden Valley-Watkins Saturday, June 27, losing 10-2.

    Caden Beseman pitched five innings, striking out two, walking five and allowed six hits. Zac Johnson was the starting pitcher for one inning, allowing five runs on five hits. The Patriots also executed one double play in the game.

    At the plate, Jake Leners and Hunter Boeckermann drove in one run each. Others with hits were Beseman, Calvin Leners and Bryce Binek.

    Albany finished the game with a total of 13 hits. Despite the loss, the Patriots did not make a single error.

    Pierz struggles against Foley

    The Pierz Legion baseball team hosted Foley Thursday, June 27. The team struggled to keep up as they fell to Foley 7-5

    Pierz scored the first run in the bottom of the third inning. Foley scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, followed by two more runs in the top of the fifth. Foley took off from there, scoring one run in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth. Pierz scored most of its points with two runs in the eighth inning.

    Pierz’s Chase Becker led the team at the plate with two hits, one run scored and was walked twice. Reese Young also had two hits, along with one run and one RBI. Others who scored runs were Weston Woitalla, Joey Stuckmayer and Kyle Winscher. Max Barclay and Kaden Kruschek also had one run batted in each.

    On the mound, Young pitched six innings, throwing five strikeouts. He allowed three runs, three errors and walked one. Chase Becker pitched three innings, throwing eight strikeouts. He also surrendered three hits, three errors and one walk. Foley finished the game with 11 hits and three errors. Pierz had eight hits and no errors.
