Rapper Fatman Scoop Remembered by Fellow Artists After His Death at Age 53

Fatman Scoop, a Grammy-winning rapper, DJ and hype man who was featured on Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control,” has died after collapsing on stage at a performance in Connecticut.

The New York rapper was performing at Hamden Town Center Park on Friday, Aug. 30, when he suffered a medical emergency, Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett wrote on Facebook.

Concertgoers and paramedics rendered aid before he was rushed to a hospital and pronounced deceased.

Fatman Scoop’s family confirmed his death on Saturday in a statement on his official Instagram page.

“It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” the statement read in part. “Last night the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon on stage and in life.”

Questlove replied to the post, “Thank you Scoop!”

Singer Jordan Sparks wrote, “My heart! Thank you for the joy, Scoop.”

Los Angeles DJ Big Boy replied: “An amazing human being. Sooooo glad I just talked with Scoop and got a chance to say ‘I love you.’ Thank you for the many years and the many memories.”

Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III, was known for his booming voice.

He worked as a radio host and rose to prominence with the release of his 1999 single “Be Faithful,” which was later re-released and topped the charts in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

He collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Missy Elliott, Lil Jon, Mariah Carey, and David Guetta.

His work with Elliott earned him a Grammy Award in the best short form music video category for the 2005 single “Lose Control,” according to Grammy.com.

Elliot offered her condolences in a post on X.

“Prayers for Fatman Scoop family for strength during this difficult time. Fatman Scoop voice & energy have contributed to many songs that made the people feel happy & want to dance for over 2 decades. Your impact is huge & will never be forgotten,” Elliott wrote.
