Whitney Houston's Historic South Africa Concert Coming to Theaters in 30th Anniversary Film

A bit of history from Whitney Houston's career is coming to theaters this fall.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Houston’s historic 1994 concert in Durban, South Africa, a movie version of the concert is coming to 900 cinemas across 25 countries, starting on Oct. 23.

Trafalgar Releasing, Sony Music Entertainment, and The Estate of Whitney E. Houston announced details about the film on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Titled The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban), the limited theatrical release will feature remastered footage in 4K, along with remastered audio.

In November 1994, the late singer did three concerts in South Africa — Durban at the Kings Park Stadium on Nov. 8; Johannesburg on Nov. 12; and Cape Town on Nov. 19.

Houston made history that year because she was the first major Western recording artist to perform in the then-newly post-apartheid country, following Nelson Mandela’s historic election win.

Per the press release, the three concerts included a combined 200,000 plus attendees. Houston also gave portions of the proceeds from her three concerts to local South African children’s charities.

Marty Callner, who produced and directed The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban), spoke about the show, calling it “pure magic.”

“Whitney was a dream to work with; I really loved her,” Callner said in the press release. "I directed her several times, but the Durban show was pure magic and the best performance I have ever witnessed."

Along with the concert, Legacy Recordings is releasing a new live album, that will feature some of Houston’s greatest hits — "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), “I Will Always Love You,” “How I Will Know,” and “I Have Nothing.”

The album will also feature a previously unreleased track titled “Love Is.” It will be available on CD and Vinyl on Nov. 8.
