Halle Berry fiercely protects her sons in the new horror film Never Let Go.

Berry leads the cast as “Momma,” a woman trying to keep her twin sons — played by Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins — safe in a world that has ended. The only way they are safe from the evil outside is if they stay tethered together.

But one of her sons has doubts about the horrors and questions his mother’s rules, which causes dire consequences for the family.

During the red carpet premiere at Regal Times Squares in New York City on Sept. 16, Berry teased the film will keep audiences guessing.

“Momma is a mother, she’s a different kind of mother,” Berry said. “Though what I know about mothers is we mother based on our environment and circumstances and so this mother is loving her boys, but I think you don’t quite know, is she struggling with mental illness? Is she delusional? Is the evil real? We don’t really know and that’s sort of the beauty of momma’s journey.”

The Oscar-winning actress also shared that she took her role as executive producer very seriously, while trying to find two actors to play her twin sons in the psychological horror film.

“I fought really hard for these boys, that was really my big producorial role in this film, to get the cast right because it’s me and just two young performers and so I went to that and fought really hard to not settle, but to keep looking until we found the right boys,” continued Berry.

“As a producer that was really important for me because I know if they’re not right, the success of the movie hinges on them and their performance,” she added.

The film is helmed by Crawl director Alexandre Aja and was written by KC Coughlin and Ryan Grassby.

Never Let Go is now playing in theaters.
