Actor and comedian George Lopez is officially stepping away from stand-up comedy.

While taping an upcoming episode of the Tamron Hall show, Lopez said he plans to retire after the release of his new comedy special for Prime Video.

The comedian filmed the special at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 27 and 28 as part of his Alright! Comedy Tour.

But in a preview clip from Tamron Hall shared with Deadline on Thursday, Oct. 10, the comic said he is leaving the stand-up stage behind.

“I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap,” he joked during the interview. “It seems like the right time. It’s been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life and it’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point.”

Lopez, 63, noted that he wants to spend more time with his daughter, Mayan Lopez, with whom he currently stars on NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez. As previously reported, the series has been renewed for a third season.

The comedian began his stand-up career in the 1980s, making appearances on shows like Comedy Club and The Arsenio Hall Show.

His comedy sets often focused on race, particularly Mexican-American culture.

Lopez’s breakthrough came with his self-titled sitcom George Lopez, which aired from 2002 to 2007 on ABC. He served as the show’s co-creator, writer, producer, and star.

The show came about after actress Sandra Bullock approached Lopez following one of his stand-up performances, impressed by his story of being abandoned by his parents and raised by his grandmother. Bullock went on to help produce George Lopez, which ran for six seasons and 120 episodes.

In 2009, Lopez made history as the first Mexican-American host of an English-language late-night show with the debut of Lopez Tonight on TBS.

His comedy albums include Alien Nation, Right Now Right Now. He received Grammy nominations for Team Leader, America’s Mexican, and Tall, Dark & Chicano. His most recent album, The Wall, was recorded at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in 2017.

Lopez and his daughter will be on Tamron Hall on Oct. 24.
