Former One Direction singer Liam Payne was found dead on Wednesday, Oct. 16, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Payne, 31, fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel and medics confirmed his death on the spot, Buenos Aires police said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.

Pablo Policicchio, who is the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, additionally told the outlet that Payne “jumped from the balcony of his room.”

Policicchio said police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, warning of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence.”

The outlet also obtained the 911 call.

In the call, the hotel manager said they had “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol. He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.”

The manager’s voice was said to have become "more anxious as the call went on," and noted to authorities that the room had a balcony.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told the local channel Todo Noticias that “authorities were investigating the circumstances of his death and conducting an autopsy.”

Before he died, Payne had reportedly been struggling with personal issues that involved his ex-fiancée, Maya Henry.

A source told People magazine that the “Strip That Down” singer was “extremely overwhelmed” by all of the legal issues that involved Henry.

In one incident that occurred sometime last week, according to the Daily Mail, Henry issued a cease-and-desist order after she alleged Payne repeatedly tried to contact her.

Henry took to TikTok on Oct. 6 where she explained that her ex, never using his name, would “blow up” not only her phone but also those of her mom and friends.

"It's always from different phone numbers too. I never know where it's going to come from... Also [he] will email me," Henry said. "Not only me, but he'll blow up my mom's phone. Is that normal behavior to you?"

"Also messaging my friends," she continued. "I found out later so they could go over to his house apparently."

Payne and Henry were in a relationship from August 2020 to early 2022. Prior to that, Payne was linked with Cheryl Cole, an X Factor U.K. judge and former Girls Aloud singer. They have a 7-year-old son together.

Payne was 16 years old when One Direction formed in 2010. The group, which also included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson was formed on the British competition show The X Factor.

Each member came on the show as a solo competitor, but the judges – Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, and Louis Walsh — felt they would do better as a group. They ended up coming in third in the competition and signing with Cowell’s record label.

One Direction was considered one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. They sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

The group disbanded in 2016 and each member pursued a solo career.

One of the last songs that Payne released was in March and the single was titled “Teardrops."
