L’incontro Brings Italian Cuisine to East Side
April has been a fruitful month for restaurant openings in Milwaukee, with at least eight new establishments bursting onto the scene in recent weeks. L’incontro added one more to that total when it opened Wednesday, but it hopes to stand out from the crowd. The new restaurant, 2315 N. Murray Ave., features a menu of Italian dishes with hints of global inspiration. It fills a space most recently occupied by Tavolino.
Barca Announces Run For Congress, Challenging Steil
Democrat Peter Barca, a former state representative who served in Congress 30 years ago, announced a new congressional run Thursday. Barca will attempt to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil of Janesville, a Republican, to serve Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District. Barca most recently served as the secretary of Wisconsin’s Department of Revenue, but he stepped down from that role earlier this month.
The Knick Offers Good Food, Lovely Views
You will not find a better place on Milwaukee’s eastside for people watching or gazing at the lake than a seat on the Knick’s front porch. The restaurant is located on the lower level of the elegant Knickerbocker Hotel which was built in the 1920s to provided residential apartments for the wealthy. Look for the entrance to the restaurant east of the green awing that leads to the hotel. Once inside The Knick, check out the frequent seasonal decorations and the highly unusual multi-colored chandeliers that add a decorative touch to the dining room.
Republican Legislature Sues Evers Over Reading Bill Veto
The Wisconsin Legislature is suing Gov. Tony Evers and the Department of Public Instruction over literacy legislation passed last summer. A February bill empowered the Joint Finance Committee to direct $50 million for specific early literacy programs. Those programs were included in a literacy bill approved by the Legislature last summer.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Hears Lawsuit Over Legislature’s Authority
The Wisconsin Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday in Gov. Tony Evers’ lawsuit against Republican legislative committee leaders’ power to veto executive actions. The case centers around the Joint Committee on Finance’s authority to stop the spending of funds through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, a grant program that allows the Department of Natural Resources to purchase land for conservation purposes. Under current law, one member of the committee — Republicans make up 12 of the 16 members — can place an anonymous hold on any proposed use of the grant funds of more than $250,000. Once a hold is placed, the committee as a whole must vote to release the funds.
Homicides in Milwaukee Down Nearly 50% in 2 Years
Homicides in Milwaukee are down nearly 50 percent this year compared to two years ago and 23 percent lower than the same time last year. Milwaukee officials believe it’s a sign that community outreach and partnerships are working to help lower the rate of gun violence in the city.
