Who is leading … Jason Gordon from Northbrook leads the way after shooting a bogey-free 6-under-par 66. Carter Stevenson from Marquette Heights is close behind in second at 5-under, and Marcus Smith from Rockford sits in third at 4-under. They pace a field that saw only 14 players shoot below par in Tuesday’s opening round.

Who to watch Wednesday … Don’t be surprised if local standout Lyle Burns makes a move toward the top of the standings. The Champaign native was the only area golfer to score in red numbers on Tuesday and has all the momentum in the world after winning his first University of Illinois Open last month.

What was said … “It brings a bunch of people into town who probably wouldn’t play here normally. The quality of golf is really neat. These younger kids, man, they can play. It’s just a different level. They hit the ball so high, and the course is set up for them. For your average player, it plays pretty tough out here, but for these guys, they can get it done.” - Atkins Golf Club starter Todd Pence on having the Illinois State Amateur in Urbana
