URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A year after reviving the boys football program, Urbana High School will be offering another opportunity for more students.

The new official school sport taking the field this fall is girls flag football.

Danville and Peoria High School already have teams. The seven-on-seven football season will run from August until October.

Head Coach Ordell Walker said the program was supposed to begin next year, but high interest jumped the timeline.

“Our athletic director, Mr. Waller, sent out a survey to just kind of see interest level and we had about 70 girls respond. About 50 said they think they would play if we started it,” Walker said. “So that gave us the motivation to try to move things up and get started this year.”

The season begins with the first practice on August 12th. The school is also having an informational meeting on July 23rd.
