In a loaded field featuring most of the biggest names in women’s golf, there was a surprise atop the leaderboard when Round 2 of the 2024 Paris Olympics women’s golf tournament concluded Thursday. Morgane Metraux of Switzerland will begin Round 3 with a one-shot lead after posting a 6-under 66 to reach 8-under for the event. The Swiss golfer, who entered the Olympics ranked No. 137 in the world , was 10-under par at one point after posting a blistering 28 on the front nine with four birdies and two eagles.
But there are prominent contenders lurking close behind.
China’s Ruoning Yin sits in silver medal position after posting Thursday's best round: A 7-under 65. New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, the only golfer in the field to medal in the previous two Olympic golf tournaments, sits in third place at 5-under entering Friday’s Round 3. France’s Celine Boutier, the Round 1 leader , struggled and fell into a tie for sixth at 3-under.
Nelly Korda of the United States, ranked No. 1 in the world, surged up the leaderboard to the silver medal position on the back nine, but ruined an otherwise strong round with a quadruple bogey at No. 16 and a three-putt bogey at No. 17 that left her tied with fellow American Rose Zhang at 2-under.
