Little League World Series: Friday results and highlights after three shutout wins

The 2024 Little League World Series is underway with thrilling games on Friday and will culminate on Sunday, August 25, with the crowning of a new champion. This champion will be the one who has proven their mettle among the best young athletes, earning the prestigious LLWS trophy.
Day 3 of this year's Little League World Series (LLWS) wasn't as exciting as prior days with top-notch pitching taking center stage. Three of the four games were shutouts: Venezuela won 10-0 over Mexico, Hawaii beat Illinois 5-0, and Chinese Taipei won 11-0 over Australia.
The lone non-shutout was still a convincing win with Florida taking a 6-1 win over Washington. Here are some of the highlights from Friday's action in Pennsylvania:
Australia finally connected with a hit against Chinese Taipei but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. They remain scoreless heading into the fifth.
Australia seems to be in a groove and prevents Chinese Taipei from adding any runs to the scoreboard. Australia is up to bat at the bottom of the second.
Australia failed to respond to Chinese Taipei's strong first-inning performance and remains scoreless as Chinese Taipei takes the bat at the top of the second.
Tavares' strong performance from the mound powered a 5-0 victory over Illinois. Hawaii becomes the first United States team to win two games following their victory over New England on Wednesday.
Illinois' Dillon Phelan is matching Hawaii's Tavares with four strikeouts through two innings. Runs will be hard to come by as Hawaii holds a 1-0 lead heading into the third.
Hawaii heads to the plate first in their second game of the tournament following a 3-1 win over New England on Wednesday. Illinois is making its debut today.
Three batters were quickly retired as Venezuela sealed a 10-0 win over Mexico. They've now won eight consecutive games dating back to the start of their regional run.
Mexico notched a third out before Venezuela could score again. But now they have to score at least one run in the bottom of the fourth to keep from a mercy rule loss.
A double play notched two outs but Venezuela's Santiago Bello still scored to make it 10-0 and make the mercy rule possible. Venezuela has a runner on third and, if he scores, the pressure is on Mexico to close the margin in order to keep the game going.
After three innings, Mexico is yet to get on the board. If Venezuela scores one run and Mexico remains scoreless in the fourth, the Little League World Series 10-run mercy rule mandates Mexico must concede the game.
Jhonson Freitez's three-run home run in the top of the first inning opened up the game for Venezuela. Mexico shut out the Caribbean in Game 1 of their international schedule. Things will be very different today.
All 39 games of the Little League World Series will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC, with streaming options including ESPN+ , the ESPN app, and fuboTV . Coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET.
The LLWS championship game is slated for Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. ET. The third-place consolation game will take place the same day at 10 a.m. ET.
The international and U.S. championship games — which serve as the semifinals to Sunday's championship game — will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
The Little League World Series is split into two brackets: the United States bracket and the international bracket. Each bracket will play out their own individual tournaments, with the winner from each bracket facing each other in the championship.
The U.S. and international brackets are double-elimination brackets, meaning a team must lose twice before it is eliminated from the tournament.
Teams from the United States have dominated the Little League World Series as of late, having won each of the last five dating back to 2017. The last international team to win the tournament was Japan, who beat Lufkin, Texas 12-2 in just five innings in the 2017 final.
The seventh annual MLB Little League Classic will take place on Monday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. ET with the New York Yankees taking on the Detroit Tigers in Williamsport. The game will air on ESPN.
