It's not tan! The internet is abuzz about Kamala Harris' suit color on DNC stage

    By Saman Shafiq, USA TODAY,

When Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise early appearance on stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, perhaps an even bigger surprise was her color choice.

Was it tan, like former President Barack Obama's now-infamous tan suit from Aug. 28, 2014? Or was it beige? Or toffee? Maybe it was toffee, the internet wondered.

Turns out it was none of those but a color that's perhaps closer to Democratic presidential nominee's heart, given her oft-quoted and parodied line : ""You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?"

The suit Harris wore on Monday night was actually coconut brown.

Who designed Kamala Harris' coconut brown pant suit?

Internet sleuths quickly tracked down that Harris was wearing a tailored, double-breasted jacket in wool "grain de poudre" by Chloé , and that the color is coconut brown.

The outfit was designed by the French brand's creative director, Chemena Kamali, who has recently been making waves with her outfits and celebrity clients, including Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, according to W Magazine .

Harris’s Chloé outfit included a traditional suit jacket, lined with black buttons, and wide-leg dress pants in the same color as the jacket. Harris paired her suit with a white bow blouse.

While Harris has not commented on her choice of outfit, a rep for Chloé told The Washington Post that the coconut brown color of the outfit was a complete coincidence.

Internet is loving Harris' pant suit

Harris' choice of outfit may have been a coincidence, as the Chloé rep suggested, but the internet cannot get enough of the outfit and are convinced that it was an Easter egg.

It could obviously not be a comment on fashion without a nod to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) from "The Devil Wears Prada," who famously gave Andrea (Anne Hathaway) an eviscerating crash course on colors and how fashion is decided.

Miranda says that when Andrea picked out "that lumpy blue" sweater to wear, she thought it was just blue. But "it's not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean." One can picture Miranda just as easily replacing "tan" with "coconut brown."

One user said Harris' choice of outfit may have been a nod to the tan suit worn by Obama almost 10 years ago to the day. Some people at the time questioned whether the shade was professional enough for the high office.

More about Kamala Harris 'coconut tree' line

The now-infamous "coconut tree" meme was born on May 10, 2023, during the President’s Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.

"You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" Harris remarked during the event. "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."

Before, Harris spoke about how "everything is in context," and about how her mother used to give her a hard time before saying the phrase.

It's unclear whether Miranda Priestly would approve of the shade.
