    Secretary of Transportation and former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg spoke on the third night of the Democratic National Convention, calling for a "better politics."

    Buttigieg, also the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was once reportedly considered as a potential to running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris . He has received a lot of attention online for stumping for Harris on Fox News, and made a quip about his appearances there at the top of his convention speech.

    He also spoke about how his everyday dinner table, with his husband and two kids, would not have been possible without "right kind of politics, the kind of politics that can make an impossible dream into an everyday reality."

    The Democratic National Committee convention is taking place in Chicago through Thursday and on the final day, Harris is scheduled to formally accept the party's nomination for the 2024 Election.

    What to know about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

    • Who he is: Buttigieg, often called "Mayor Pete" is the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and had an unsuccessful run for presidency in 2020. Currently the Secretary of Transportation under the Biden administration, Buttigieg was rumored to be a potential VP pick on the Harris VP ticket but was passed over by the selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz . Buttigieg is arguably the most prominent gay politician in the country.
    • What role he plays: Buttigieg's Rust Belt roots and sharp speaking style make him an asset in the press room and on the campaign trail, and his relative youth, at 42, means he will likely continue to be a major player in the party's future
    • Key quote: "We will choose a better politics, a politics that calls us to our better selves and offers us a better everyday. That is what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz represents. That is what Democrats represent. That is what awaits us when America decides to end Trump's politics of darkness, once and for all," Buttigieg said.

    When and where is the DNC

    The Democratic National Convention will take place from August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois.

    The United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks, will be the main venue for the DNC.

    Chicago has hosted the Democratic Convention 11 times, most recently in 1996 when the United Center saw President Bill Clinton was nominated for a second time.

    How to watch and stream the 2024 DNC

    The convention will air live on its website , from the United Center in Chicago between 6:15 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern (5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m Central) on Monday, and 7 p.m to 11 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central) the other days.

    USA TODAY will provide livestream coverage on YouTube each night of the DNC, Monday through Thursday.

    The DNC announced nightly themes for the convention. The title of the convention is "For the People, For Our Future."

    Here are the themes for each night:

    • Monday: "For the People"
    • Tuesday: "A Bold Vision for America's Future"
    • Wednesday: "A Fight for our Freedoms"
    • Thursday: "For our Future"
