Minnesota Governor Tim Walz formally accepted the Democratic party's nomination for vice-president at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago Tuesday.

Walz was clearly holding back tears during the ovation he received from the Democratic delegates as he walked on stage but proceeded to thank Vice President Harris in the opening of his acceptance speech.

"We are all here for one beautiful, simple reason. We love America," Walz said.

Walz's time as a public-school teacher was a through line in the speech, tying his public education work to his achievements as governor.

"Other schools were banning books from their schools, in Minnesota we were banning hunger in ours," Walz said.

The governor touched on reproductive rights and told the story of how his daughter Hope was conceived through the use of fertility treatments.

Walz, who launched the " weird " line of attack on the Republican ticket before being picked as Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, took a swipe at opposing vice-presidential nominee JD Vance saying that none of the kids in Walz's tiny high school graduating class in Butte, Nebraska, went on to Yale.

Walz tied Donald Trump to Project 2025 , a running theme in the convention. "I coached high school football long enough to know, and trust me on this, when somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they're going to use it," Walz said.

"Never underestimate a public-school teacher," he added.
