Week 1 of the NFL season is over, and several players who were preseason MVP favorites made their first cases for the award throughout the weekend.

There has only been one week of regular season action, so the betting odds for the MVP race have not changed much. Preseason favorite Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes still leads the way after a strong 2024 debut.

However, there were a few early shake-ups further down in the betting odds rankings after each team's first game. After his first win of the season, Houston Texans' second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud has improved his odds slightly.

Here are the top player rankings for the 2024 NFL MVP award in order of current betting odds, courtesy of BetMGM .

NFL MVP rankings: Odds after Week 1

    5. Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals (+1400)

    At open: 3 (+900)

Burrow's odds dipped after a Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots at home. It was his first game back after a wrist injury ended his 2023 season early, and he finished 21-of-29 on pass attempts for 164 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. It's also worth noting that wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was a game-time decision whom the Bengals declared active just before the game, and fellow wide receiver Tee Higgins was out.

Burrow and the Bengals will travel to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Chiefs in Week 2.

    4. Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (+1000)

    At open: 4 (+1000)

No change for Hurts' odds after a Week 1 win over the Packers in Brazil. Running back and offseason addition Saquon Barkley was the bigger star of the offense on Friday night with his 132 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns – two rushing, one receiving – on 26 touches.

Despite throwing two interceptions, Hurts did enough to not diminish his odds in his first game of 2024: 20-of-34 passing for 278 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. He and the Eagles host the Falcons on "Monday Night Football" in Week 2.

    3. C.J. Stroud, QB, Houston Texans (+900)

    At open: 5 (+1100)

The second-year quarterback started off the 2024 season strong after receiving down-ballot MVP votes in his rookie year. Stroud played mistake-free football as he led Houston to a divisional win in Week 1. He threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-32 passing.

The Texans will host the Bears on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 2.

    2. Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills (+550)

    At open: 2 (+850)

Allen may not have moved in the rankings, but he improved his betting odds the best after showing out in Week 1. He led the Bills to their first win of the season after trailing 17-3 near the end of the first half. The 28-year-old was 18-of-23 on pass attempts for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Allen also scored twice as a rusher – meaning he was responsible for all four of Buffalo's touchdowns – and tallied 39 rushing yards.

The Bills hit the road to play the Dolphins in Miami for Week 2 on "Thursday Night Football."

    1. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs (+400)

    At open: 1 (+500)

There's nowhere to go but down when you're at the top, and the two-time MVP winner's stellar Week 1 performance ensured that didn't happen. Mahomes was 20-of-28 on pass attempts for 291 yards, one touchdown and one interception. It was enough to lead the Chiefs to a Week 1 victory and a second straight win over the Ravens, who Kansas City defeated in last year's AFC championship game.

Mahomes and the Chiefs host the Bengals on Sunday afternoon in Week 2.
