Who are the best rookies on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball this season?

That's a question that the annual Rookie of the Year awards aim to answer every year. There has been only one week to see all of the 2024 rookies in action so far this season, but there has already been some movement in betting odds after Week 1 .

However, the favorites in each race – Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards – have not changed. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams still holds the edge over the rest of the field on offense, while Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner leads the pack on the defensive side.

Here are how the odds stack up for each award as Week 2 begins:

LAST WEEK'S RANKINGS: Favorites to win 2024-25 ROTY awards

2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds: Favorites and sleepers

Here are the odds for Offensive Rookie of the Year as of Thursday, Sept. 12, courtesy of BetMGM :

    1. Caleb Williams, QB, Chicago Bears (+150)
    2. Jayden Daniels, QB, Washington Commanders (+350)
    3. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Arizona Cardinals (+800)
    4. Xavier Worthy, WR, Kansas City Chiefs (+900)
    5. Bo Nix, QB, Denver Broncos (+1300)
    6. Malik Nabers, WR, New York Giants (+1500)
    7. Keon Coleman, WR, Buffalo Bills (+2000)

The top two overall picks take the top two spots in betting odds after Week 1, which is not a major surprise. The two highly touted quarterback prospects and top picks will be among betting favorites until another player steps up and forces them down the list later in the season.

For bettors who prefer to bet on sleeper picks, taking any of these top wide receivers to win the award could age well down the road. Harrison, Worthy, Nabers and Coleman all appear to be in or close to claiming the WR1 spot for each of their respective teams.

2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds: Favorites and sleepers

Here are the odds for Defensive Rookie of the Year as of Thursday, Sept. 12, courtesy of BetMGM :

    1. Dallas Turner, EDGE, Minnesota Vikings (+400)
    2. Laiatu Latu, EDE, Indianapolis Colts (+475)
    3. Jared Verse, EDGE, Los Angeles Rams (+625)
    4. Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Philadelphia Eagles (+1200)
    5. Byron Murphy II, DT, Seattle Seahawks (+1400)
    6. Chop Robinson, EDGE, Miami Dolphins (+1700)
    7. Terrion Arnold, CB, Detroit Lions (+2000)

OPINION: Beware, NFL rookie QBs: Massive reality check is coming

After a draft class that was loaded with offensive talent, the picture for DROY appears less apparent. No player has the same lead in odds that Williams or Daniels do in the OROY race.

As edge rushers, as well as two of the top defensive players select in the draft, Turner and Latu hold a slight edge over the field. Verse also saw his odds jump up from +1000 last week after playing 70% of defensive snaps and recording his first sack last week against the Lions.

Cornerbacks are a good sleeper pick in DROY betting because of the uphill battle they face against edge rushers who can pile up sacks. The last two corners to win the award were Sauce Gardner – after leading the league in passes defended in 2022 – and Marshon Lattimore – who was tied for fifth in the NFL with five interceptions in 2017.

Mitchell and Arnold were excellent defenders in college and now play in some sturdy defensive backfields, perhaps opening up more chances to stand out among other rookie defenders.
