What to know about Skylar Thompson, Miami Dolphins backup quarterback

The Miami Dolphins will look to backup quarterback Skylar Thompson for the foreseeable future after starter Tua Tagovailoa was injured during Thursday night's 31-10 home loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The 27-year-old Thompson went 8-14 for 80 yards after Tagovailoa left in the third quarter with a concussion after colliding with Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

Tagovailoa will have to go through the NFL's concussion protocol to return to the field, and his status for Miami's next game on Sept. 22 against the Seahawks in Seattle is not known. If he can't play, the reigns will be turned over to Thompson, who is in this third year with Miami.

College career

Skylar Thompson enrolled at Kansas State after a prolific high school career at Fort Osage High School in Independence, Missouri. He redshirted in 2016 before playing in eight games and throwing for five touchdowns in 2017.

He won the starting job before his sophomore season, and his best campaign was in 2019 when he threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns and ran for 405 yards and 11 more scores on the ground.

His final collegiate season was in 2021 after an injury-filled 2020 season. He completed 70 percent of his passes for 2,103 yards and 12 touchdowns.

NFL career

Skylar Thompson was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft after his time at Kansas State. He appeared in seven games during his rookie year, including two starts relieving injured quarterbacks.

He started the team's AFC Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills, after Tagovailoa was ruled out because of a concussion. Thompson went 18-45 for 220 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the 34-31 loss.

Thompson did not see any action during the 2023 season before being called upon during the Week 2 game against the Bills.
