    Florida power outage map: Track outages after Hurricane Helene makes landfall Thursday

    Hurricane Helene made landfall as a powerful Category 4 hurricane late Thursday night, with sustained winds of about 140 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

    The storm made landfall about 11:10 p.m. local time near Perry, Florida, about 50 miles southeast of Tallahassee, and hundreds of thousands of power outages were reported in the immediate aftermath.

    USA TODAY's power outage map showed more than 200,000 without power in Pinellas County and more than 900,000 statewide by 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

    Helene's projected path includes urban areas like Tallahassee, Florida, and Atlanta, as well as Asheville, North Carolina, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    As of 1:45 p.m. ET Thursday, Florida was reporting just under 48,000 power outages across the state, according to a USA TODAY power outage tracker . That number is expected to grow as Helene approaches the state's Gulf Coast.

    There were over 10,000 outages reported in Lee County, over 6,000 outages in Miami-Dade County, and just under 5,000 outages reported in Palm Beach County.
