As the Southeast begins the recovery process from Hurricane Helene , which left a death toll of at least 43 and caused billions in damage , the National Hurricane Center is tracking a hurricane and tropical storm in the Atlantic and a possible new tropical storm forming in Helene's wake.
Helene , which weakened into a post-tropical cyclone Friday, is expected bring some rain and wind as it moves along the Kentucky-Tennessee border Saturday, then across southern Pennsylvania and Virginia before heading out into the Atlantic Ocean by Tuesday.
The National Hurricane Center is also watching other storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean including Tropical Storm Joyce, which formed in the central tropical Atlantic Ocean on Friday. The storm was located about 1,120 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds of near 50 mph.
Tropical Storm Joyce , which has tropical storm-force winds currently extending up to 105 miles from its center, is moving to the northwest at 10 mph and is expected to weaken as it turns northwest and north Sunday night and Monday, the center said. The storm is expected to degenerate into a remnant low by early Tuesday and causes no threat to land.
Illustrations include an array of forecast tools and models, and not all are created equal. The hurricane center uses only the top four or five highest performing models to help make its forecasts.
NHC also tracking Hurricane Isaac and a system in the Caribbean
Hurricane Isaac , located in the central Atlantic Ocean about 695 miles west-northwest of the Azores, remained a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday morning, the center said . Isaac is moving east-northeast at 20 mph and is expected to turn to the northeast over the next couple of days. Its maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph with hurricane-force winds extending up to 45 miles from its center. However, the storm is expected to be a post-tropical cyclone on Monday.
Neither Isaac nor Tropical Storm Joyce pose threats to the United States.
However, another an area of low pressure could form over the western Caribbean Sea could by the middle of next week, the NHC said. Environmental conditions are expected to be "conducive for additional development" and it could form into a tropical depression as it enters the Gulf of Mexico during the middle to end of next week, the NHC said Saturday. That system, if it strengthens to a named storm, would likely be called Tropical Storm Kirk. It has a 40% chance of developing over the next seven days, the center said.
Should a storm develop it is expected to be west of the path of Helene, AccuWeather senior director of forecasting operations Dan DePodwin said in a forecast . "At this early stage, however, it is too early to rule out any possibilities regarding the future track of a potential tropical storm," DePodwin stated.
Another tropical depression could form next week in the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, the center said. Currently west of the Cabo Verde Islands, the system is expected to move west and northwest across the Atlantic. The center forecast its formation chance at 60% over the next seven days.
