    The first wave of voter registration deadlines is approaching in 15 states: Check yours

    With just over a month to go until Election Day , the deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching in more than a dozen states.

    Voting is already underway in several states, as early voting started up to 45 days ahead of the election in places including Virginia, South Dakota and Minneapolis.

    But the first wave of deadlines for new voters to register is coming up at the 30-day countdown until the election. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 15 states have voter registration deadlines 28-30 days before the election, meaning the last day to register in some states is as early as Sunday, Oct. 6.

    First wave of voter registration deadlines starts Oct. 6

    Federal law limits the earliest voter registration deadline to 30 days ahead of the election, which is Oct. 6. Here are the 15 states with the earliest voter registration deadline, according to NCSL:

    • Alaska
    • Arizona
    • Arkansas
    • Florida
    • Georgia
    • Indiana
    • Kentucky
    • Louisiana
    • Mississippi
    • New Mexico
    • Ohio
    • Rhode Island
    • South Carolina
    • Tennessee
    • Texas

    In many of these states, different modes of registration (i.e., online, in-person and by mail) have different deadlines. Voters can check their local election offices to learn about their specific voter registration deadlines in their state.

    Next up on the road to the 2024 election is the vice presidential debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
