UNLV ’s path to making the College Football Playoff got more treacherous after a gutting loss last week to Syracuse , but its dream of making it to the biggest stage in the sport remains alive.
The Rebels will continue that quest Friday at Utah State in a matchup of Mountain West Conference programs.
After racing out to a 4-0 start that included wins against a pair of Big 12 teams, Houston and Kansas, UNLV suffered its first setback of the season last Friday in a 44-41 overtime loss to Syracuse. The Rebels led by seven with 30 seconds remaining, but surrendered a late touchdown — which capped off an 11-play, 75-yard drive for the Orange — and had to settle for a field goal in overtime before giving up what would be the game-winning score for Syracuse on the ensuing possession.
Though the loss dropped it out of the US LBM Coaches Poll , UNLV could still earn the coveted spot in the playoff reserved for the highest-ranked conference champion from outside the Power Four leagues. To do that, though, it will likely have to win out, a task that begins with beating Utah State .

It has been a tumultuous season for the Aggies .
Former coach Blake Anderson was fired in July for contacting a potential domestic violence victim and a witness to the incident, which involved a Utah State football player. Under interim head coach Nate Dreiling, the Aggies have struggled near the halfway point of the season, with a 1-4 record that includes no wins against FBS opponents. Their schedule has been difficult, though, with three losses to teams that were ranked in the top 25 at the time of the matchup.
