23andMe+ Total Health
The just-launched 23andMe+ Total Health service offers easy access to comprehensive health screenings.
23andMe+ Total Health is a new annual membership that expands on the 23andMe DNA test to include comprehensive blood tests and health screenings. The brand says the service includes all the perks of 23andMe+ Premium, plus biannual blood testing which looks at advanced blood biomarkers, exome sequencing which analyzes a portion of your DNA to screen for disease-causing variants and a personalized health action plan put together by specially-trained clinicians.
How reliable is 23andMe?
23andMe uses saliva samples and now blood samples to provide users with informed genetic and health information. It should be noted that 23andMe has recently been at the center of a privacy dispute after a large DNA data breach . While 23andMe remains one of our favorite DNA testing kits , we cannot guarantee your personal information will be safe when using the service's DNA and health screening kits. According to 23andMe, all saliva samples are processed in Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified and College of American Pathologists-accredited labs. Am I eligible for the 23andMe+ Total Health service?
Most adults are eligible for the 23andMe+ Total Health service. To access the service you must be over 18 and you can not have had a blood transfusion in the last 30 days or a bone marrow transplant. Due to state and regional restrictions, residents in Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and U.S. territories are not eligible for the service.
What features does a 23andMe+ Total Health membership include?
Biannual blood testing: Comprehensive blood tests look at over 55 blood biomarkers, providing you with a comprehensive metabolic panel. This twice-a-year blood test screens for TSH, total cholesterol, blood glucose and more.
Exome sequencing: This genetic screening analyzes part of your DNA and, according the 23andMe, detects 200x more disease-causing variants and screens for 100+ genes that are associated with more than 55 health conditions, including thyroid cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Biological Age: This feature breaks down your biological age (as opposed to your actual age) by analyzing important biomarkers.
Personalized health plan: Using your test results a trained clinician will put together an individualized health action plan for you to follow. You will also be able to reach them directly with unlimited messaging if you have specific questions you want answered.
23andMe+ Premium: With a Total Health membership you'll get all the benefits that come with 23andMe+ Premium, including Historical Matches, a Genetic Health Risk report and more.
Is 23andMe+ Total Health worth it?
If you want to take a deeper look at your overall health, the 23andMe+ Total Health service could help you do just that. While it is an investment at just under $1,000 for your first year, the service claims to give you a comprehensive breakdown of your health and could even help identify illnesses and health conditions that you may be predisposed to.
USA TODAY recently addressed customer's concerns surrounding 23andMe, saying that the data breach in 2023 compromised data in nearly 6.9 million DNA Relatives and Family Tree profiles. While the future of 23andMe user data is uncertain, USA TODAY noted that, "according to the 23andMe website, users can remove their personal information anytime by opting out of the 23andMe data section of account settings. The company says the data is deleted once a user submits and confirms the request." It is important to note that per the privacy statement, 23andMe is legally required to retain certain information.
