Is Quinn Ewers returning for Texas football before Saturday's Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma?

All indications this week have been that Ewers should return to the lineup after sustaining an oblique strain during the Longhorns ' 56-7 win over UTSA on Sept. 14. Ewers missed the last two games, which redshirt freshman Arch Manning earned the start in.

On Monday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Ewers returned to practice last week during Texas' bye week. While he did not name Ewers the starter for the game outright, Sarkisian indicated Ewers would be the starter. It was confirmed on Thursday, again by Sarkisian.

Before his injury, Ewers completed 58-of-79 passes (73%) for 691 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. Manning filled in and completed 41-of-60 passes (68%) for 583 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions in his two starts, both Texas wins.

Quinn Ewers injury update

On Thursday afternoon, Sarkisian announced Ewers would return to the Longhorns' starting lineup against Oklahoma.

Ewers was listed as "probable" on Texas' initial student-athlete availability report on Wednesday, indicating he is closing in on his return to the field since being hurt on Sept. 14. Sarkisian sounded confident he would have his starter to begin the season back.

As a sophomore, Ewers completed 272 of 394 passes (69%) for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. With Texas sitting as the No. 1 program in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 polls and being a serious College Football Playoff national championship contender, Sarkisian looks likely to go with the quarterback with more experience.

"If we had to play today, sure," Sarkisian said on Monday. "I want to see how he responds to extended work, and what that looks like to make sure that he's as healthy as he can be."
