A North Carolina man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he fatally shot another driver during a road rage incident over the weekend and also shot at the driver’s three children.

The road rage incident happened around 4:53 p.m. Saturday in Newton, about 44 miles northwest of Charlotte, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release posted Saturday night.

Deputies were called to the scene and found a man who had been shot. The man, later identified as 40-year-old Jeffery Michael Guida , was already dead when deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office said in the news release.

Eyewitnesses told investigators that Guida and another man both stopped and got out of their vehicles near the intersection.

Witnesses said the other man, later identified as 75-year-old Terrell Eugene Giddens, fired multiple rounds into the victim’s vehicle during the altercation, where Guida’s three children were sitting. Guida’s children, ages 2, 11 and 13, were not injured.

Witnesses gave deputies descriptions of both vehicles and the men involved, which investigators used to find Giddens at a home in Sherrills Ford.

Giddens has been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted first degree murder, the sheriff’s office said. His first court appearance was set for Monday, the sheriff's office added.

Guida’s family was also in court Monday but did not want to talk, local television station WSOC-TV reported. Giddens, the alleged shooter, told the judge his family would hire an attorney for him, the outlet reported.

The Catawba County Clerk's Office told USA TODAY Wednesday morning that Giddens waived his right to a court-appointed attorney. It was not immediately clear who was representing him in court.

Yep, we need a few more guns out there. How stupid are people becoming to kill someone over a perceived slight on the road. Grow up and learn how to use your head. It is not worth killing someone because they cut you off or whatever. Now, you will be in prison, and his children have to grow up without their father and with this horrible memory. Was it worth it?
