Just 18 days until Election Day

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are closing in on the final weeks of the 2024 presidential election.

Keeping up with the campaigns: On Thursday, Harris is focusing her campaign on a pivotal state: Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Trump will participate in a longtime political tradition in New York City, known as the Al Smith dinner.

    • The race is neck-and-neck right now . In a Real Clear Politics average of national polls, Harris leads Trump by 1.7 percentage points.
    • Harris is courting Republicans. The vice president joined Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday for a tense interview shortly after delivering afternoon remarks at a rally in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, where she was accompanied by more than 100 Republicans backing her campaign.
    • Meanwhile, Trump repeated debunked rumors . On Wednesday, the former president doubled down on false claims that Haitian migrants are eating pets in a pitch to undecided Latino voters.

US bombs Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen

U.S. B-2 bombers attacked weapons caches belonging to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen late Wednesday, in a strike that appears to be the first such use of the strategic stealth bomber against the militia. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin said in a statement the operation was ordered by President Joe Biden to "further degrade" the Houthis' ability to launch attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea. The strikes could also be a warning to Iran at a time when Tehran and U.S. ally Israel have appeared on the verge of a full-blown war. Read more

Biden touts student debt relief milestone

President Joe Biden lauded the latest tranche of debt cancellation – $4.7 billion for more than 60,000 student loan borrowers, according to administration officials – as a milestone in his efforts to reform the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. The PSLF program was created in 2007 to cancel the student loan debt of workers in government and many nonprofit jobs, but failed to achieve that goal. Before Biden took office, only 7,000 borrowers ever managed to qualify for relief. But now the number of borrowers who’ve had their loans forgiven under PSLF will reach more than one million. A full, Hunter’s supermoon has come! The first full moon of fall — also one of this year's four "supermoons" — gets its name for the time of year when hunters began collecting wild game, like deer, to store for the cold winter months.
