A new survey from Realtor.com found that one in four Americans take local and national politics into consideration before choosing a new place to live.

The poll, which was conducted in September, found that 23% of people who are likely to buy their first home in the next year are waiting to do so until after the November election.

“Choosing where to call home can be a complex decision, as buyers look for the right home at the right price in the right place. Politics is one more important consideration for many buyers and renters as they evaluate where they feel comfortable putting down roots for the short or long term,” Hannah Jones, a senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com said.

The survey also found that personal politics have influenced moving at all as one in three Americans had thought about moving because their personal politics did not align with their local area.

The poll from Realtor.com found more ways that politics influenced people's moving behaviors, sometimes even split by party lines.

Both liberals and conservatives use politics as a determining factor in moving

The poll found that 30% of liberals and 27% of conservatives would keep politics in mind to determine moving. Another finding showed that about 40% of Americans said that their personal politics align with the politics of the area they live in.

Out of all age groups, millennials placed the most importance on politics when the time to move comes. The poll found that 32% of millennials thought it was extremely important to live in a place where their political views are shared.

“Many millennials are in the season of life where they are thinking more seriously about buying a home and putting down roots for the long haul,” Jones added.

Gen X followed millennials with 23%, then Gen Z with 22% and finally baby boomers, who came in at 16%.
