WASHINGTON – Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist under the Trump administration, will be released from a Connecticut prison on Tuesday – a week from Election Day – after serving a 4-month prison sentence.

Bannon reported to prison in July for contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021 . He was also fined $6,500.

A jury found the top Trump ally guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress. One count came after Bannon refused to sit for a deposition with the committee, and another was for refusing to provide documents.

He was one of two former Trump aides, along with Peter Navarro , who were convicted of defying the committee. Navarro served his $-month sentence in a federal prison in Miami and was released in July.

Steve Bannon broadcasts outside of the convention hall during the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC 2024, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. on Feb 22. 2024. Trump's former campaign and White House strategist was convicted in 2022 of contempt of Congress. Bannon was charged after defying a demand to appear before a U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack by Trump supporters seeking to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's November 2020 election victory. Bannon, who has appealed, has yet to be sentenced. Bannon also faces New York state charges of money laundering and conspiracy, accused by prosecutors of swindling Trump supporters in a scheme involving donations solicited to help build his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Bannon, who pleaded not guilty, is due to go on trial in May 2024. He also was charged in federal court over that same project, but the case ended when Trump pardoned Bannon in the final hours of his presidency in 2021. Jack Gruber, Jack Gruber / USA TODAY NETWORK

Attempts by Bannon's legal team to have him released from prison early and to have his conviction overturned were unsuccessful.

Bannon is the host of the “War Room” podcast – a favorite among Trump supporters – that has garnered millions of listeners. Since Bannon’s imprisonment, his podcast has featured guest hosts including Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas .

Bannon has also made false claims about the 2020 election on the podcast, including that it was impacted by voter fraud. Former President Donald Trump has made similar false claims about voter fraud impacting the 2020 race, allegations that have been rejected by courts.

Bannon also previously vowed that Trump’s political opponents will be investigated and prosecuted if the former president is reelected.

Should be immediately remanded as a flight risk in the pending state case. He would fit in nicely at Rikers.
