Ohio State names its starting quarterback

Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day has his guy he’s ready to battle with under center for 2024, and on Thursday, he made it official in naming Kansas State transfer Will Howard the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes this fall.

When Howard made the decision to transfer during the offseason, it was assumed he would eventually get the nod, but that he would have to win a competition between him and returner Devin Brown. Then, OSU got a transfer from incoming Alabama five-star quarterback, Julian Sayin, as another talented signal-caller in the mix.

In the end though, Howard’s veteran leadership and abilities began to separate in fall camp and he’ll get the nod, as almost everyone expected. For Day, it didn’t sound overly complicated.

“When you take the aggregate of all the numbers, Will graded out significantly ahead of the other guys in the team work,” Day said … “We’re really excited about Will. He has really taken command of the offense.”

Now that Howard has been named the starter, the Ohio State players and coaches can focus on moving forward with him at the center of the offense. There’s no doub that offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will now get to work identifying the plays and sequences to best utilize his talent.
