The Washington Commanders dropped to 0-2 in the preseason after Saturday night’s 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels started for the Commanders, played two series, and completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards. Daniels also rushed for 13 yards on two attempts and led Washington into field-goal range on both drives, but kicker Riley Patterson only made one of those field goals.

Jeff Driskel relieved Daniels in the second quarter and got off to a quick start with a 41-yard run. Washington’s offense again stalled, leading to another Patterson missed field goal. However, Driskel would lead another Commanders’ drive into Miami territory before halftime, and Patterson connected to make it a 10-6 game at halftime.

Washington didn’t start three defensive line starters, as Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Clelin Ferrell did not play. Linebacker Bobby Wagner also sat for a second consecutive game. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa looked sharp against Washington, completing all five of his passing attempts for 51 yards and a touchdown. Tagovailoa did not play again.

Penalties were an issue for the Commanders, as they had seven for 64 yards, including two by right tackle Andrew Wylie. In fairness to Wylie, he’s missed a significant portion of training camp.

The second half featured sloppy play from both teams, with only three points scored. Still, the Commanders had a chance to tie the game late when quarterback Trace McSorley drove Washington down the field and was intercepted on a tipped pass. However, the Commanders forced a fumble and took the ball back. McSorley drove Washington to inside the 10-yard line when his pass to wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley was a bit off target, preserving the win for Miami.

The Commanders fall to 0-2 and come home for the first time this preseason against New England next Sunday night. It’s the preseason finale for both teams.
