After undergoing an MRI on Monday, Denver Broncos cornerback Damarri Mathis has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

There is “no timetable” for Mathis’ return, according to Klis. The recovery timeline will depend on the severity of the injury. If it’s a serious injury, Mathis could be sidelined for up to eight weeks, based on recovery times of previous high ankle sprains in the NFL.

When the Broncos set an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, they are allowed to place up to two players on injured reserve with a designation to return. Players who go on IR after the initial roster is set are eligible to return after sitting out four games.

If Denver opts to place Mathis on IR, he would be eligible to return for a Week 5 showdown against the Las Vegas Raiders at home on Oct. 6. Mathis, 25, was picked by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Pitt. He is entering his third season in the NFL.
