The Jaguars are releasing safety Terrell Edmunds but hope to sign him to their practice squad if he does not sign to another team’s 53-player roster, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Edmunds, a former first-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2018, signed a one-year contract with Jacksonville in May. Before joining the Jaguars, he spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Steelers and split last year between Philadelphia and Tennessee.

Edmunds was a preseason standout with Jacksonville, logging seven tackles and two forced fumbles over 70 defensive snaps. His 28 special teams were tied for third-most on the team this August.

Over 95 career regular season appearances including 79 starts, Edmunds has compiled 458 tackles including 17 for loss, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions, 28 defended passes and one forced fumble.

As of Edmunds’ release, Jacksonville has eight safeties on its roster before the NFL’s 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, 53-player deadline: Andre Cisco, Darnell Savage Jr., Antonio Johnson, Daniel Thomas, Andrew Wingard, Tashaun Gipson Sr., Adrian Amos and Josh Proctor.
