The Denver Broncos are placing cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) on short-term injured reserve, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis .

When the Broncos set their initial 53-man roster later today, they are allowed to place up to two players on IR with a designation to return. Mathis will take up one of those designations and he will not count against the active roster.

Mathis suffered a high ankle sprain in the team’s preseason finale on Sunday. He will now have to sit out at least the first four games of the 2024 season before being eligible to return.

Mathis, 25, is entering his third season in the NFL. He has recorded 100 tackles and eight pass breakups through his first 33 games.

Denver appears set to go into the regular season with six cornerbacks: Pat Surtain, Ja’Quan McMillian, Riley Moss, Levi Wallace, Kris Abrams-Draine and special teams ace Tremon Smith.
