Swinney says he saw ‘a lot of bright spots’ in Klubnik’s game against Georgia

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ opening game of 2024 didn’t go as they would have liked. They were picked apart by the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs 34-3 , and the Clemson offense failed to score a touchdown.

Starting quarterback Cade Klubnik entered the season with a lot of promise, and a tough performance against a team like Georgia isn’t going to make or break your season. Still, expectations were higher for him and the offense. Completing 18-of-29 passing for 142 yards and an interception , it was an underwhelming day for Clemson’s passing game.

Swinney still saw some bright spots in the young quarterback’s play, including his leadership following the brutal defeat.

“I think there were a lot of bright spots with Cade,” Swinney said. “He’s also one of those guys I’m really proud of, from just comments in the locker room, and that’s what leaders do. So, that kid will show up Monday ready to go, and he’s just going to keep getting better. But I thought he competed his butt off.”

Swinney liked what he saw off the field, but also on the field. Beyond just competing, Swinney saw some strengths in his quarterback’s game.

“I thought Cade played well. I think he did a lot of positive things. I really do,” Swinney said. “He did a lot of positive things in the game. Starks made a great play on the one ball, on the box fade. That was a great play by a great player.”

Klubnik’s next opportunity to prove himself is in Week 2 at home against App State.
