On Saturday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide improved their record to 2-0 overall on the season, as the program defeated the South Florida Bulls by a final score of 42-16.

A game in which the Crimson Tide struggled as big favorites, here are a few instant reactions from Saturday night’s victory over the Bulls.

    Penalties

Penalties were a big issue for the Crimson Tide on Saturday night, with likely none bigger than a holding call that wiped-out a Jalen Milroe touchdown run in the second quarter. In all, Alabama committed 13 penalties for a total of 120 yards, with eight of those coming in the first half alone.

    Offensive line struggles

On top of multiple holding penalties, the Alabama offensive line struggled to protect the quarterback at times Saturday night. In addition to this, Alabama also struggled to establish the run for a majority of the contest before finding success late.

    Third down defense

While the Alabama defense struggled at times, the Crimson Tide were strong on third down Saturday night. In all, the Crimson Tide held South Florida to 2-for-18 on third downs, as well as 0-for-2 on fourth downs.

    Freshmen make big plays late

A pair of Alabama true freshmen – Ryan Williams and Jaylen Mbakwe – had big plays in the fourth quarter each. Mbakwe had a 28-yard punt return to help set up a touchdown, while Williams had a 43-yard touchdown reception at the 5:50 mark.
