After being recognized by one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play for his performance in week one, a former Oklahoma Sooners star has received even more recognition for his strong play.

His former teammate at OU was honored right alongside him, after having a similarly strong outing, helping his new team start 1-0.

Baker Mayfield replaced Tom Brady as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, and after signing a contract extension this offseason, he’s entering his second year leading the way for the Bucs. After Brady named him one of his “three stars” for week one of the NFL season on Tuesday, Mayfield earned further praise on Wednesday.

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon was also spectacular in week one, making quite the first impression on his new team, after spending his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals

Mayfield was named the FedEx Air Player of the Week for his performance in a win over the Washington Commanders. He threw for 4 touchdowns and 289 yards while compiling a 146.4 passer rating.

Mixon, meanwhile, earned FedEx Ground Player of the Week honors for his play in a win over the Indianapolis Colts. He rushed for 159 yards on 30 carries in his Houston debut and had a touchdown.

The pair shared the backfield in Norman, alongside Kansas City Chiefs running back Samaje Perine, in 2015 and 2016. Together, they helped lead the Sooners to back-to-back Big 12 championships, a College Football Playoff appearance in 2015, and a Sugar Bowl victory in 2016. Two of Bob Stoops’ finest players at the next level helped him get plenty of wins in his final two seasons as OU’s head coach.

Now, Mayfield and Mixon will look to follow up their excellent 2024 debuts in week two, when Mayfield’s Buccaneers take on the Detroit Lions and Mixon’s Texans face off against the Chicago Bears.
