Ravens DB Kyle Hamilton takes full ownership of busted coverage in loss to Chiefs

Baltimore Ravens strong safety Kyle Hamilton is considered among the best at his position in the National Football League.

However, the season-opening loss at Kansas City was an off night for him. Overall, the secondary was disappointing, as they gave up nearly 300 yards passing to Patrick Mahomes.

One of the biggest plays was a critical fourth-quarter touchdown pass to rookie Xavier Worthy. The receiver, who broke the scouting combine record for the fastest 40-yard dash in history, got loose for a 35-yard score.

Hamilton says that the blown coverage was all his fault. He missed his assignment of protecting the deep half

“That was on me, 100 percent,” Hamilton told the media after practice.

“I was supposed to return to the half; I played the wrong call. It wasn’t on [defensive coordinator] Zach Orr. It wasn’t on Marlon [Humphrey] or anybody else.

    “It was on me.

“If you watch the play, you can probably tell we’re missing a half-safety. I got kind of mixed up. I was supposed to return to the half, and I take the blame for that.”

Hamilton was one of the league’s best defensive backs last season, and all the preseason hype lists included him among the league’s top overall players.

However, the rising star admits that this current campaign is not off to a suboptimal start.

“I don’t think I played well at all,” Hamilton added.

“It’s a week-to-week league. I’m excited to go back out there this weekend and makeup for it.”

He’s right that better days are ahead. Perhaps the uptick will begin with Sunday’s home opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
