Steve Spurrier takes shot at Auburn's recent home struggles

Jordan-Hare Stadium is known historically for being one of the SEC’s toughest venues due to Auburn’s ability to win close games or remain in contention to win games that experts predicted them to be out of.

However, due to recent on-field performance struggles, fewer teams are threatened by the walls of Jordan-Hare Stadium. At least that’s what a former SEC player and head coach says anyway.

Steve Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner and later head coach of Florida and South Carolina, was a guest on the Another Dooley Noted Podcast with host Pat Dooley. The two discussed week two’s outcomes, including Auburn’s loss to Cal. Spurrier, who is known for cracking jokes at the expense of fellow SEC teams, made Auburn the butt of his latest joke following their loss despite being two-touchdown favorites.

“Cal beat Auburn,” Spurrier said this week. “13-point favorites at home? Auburn used to be a tough place to play.”

Auburn is 14-12 at home since 2020. Although Auburn’s home record is not as great as fans feel that it should be, the Tigers have managed to keep several games close. Last season, Auburn lost to three top-15 teams: Georgia, Ole Miss, and Alabama, by a combined 17 points. In 2021, Auburn defeated then-No. 10 Ole Miss, 31-20, and lost to No. 3 Alabama, 24-22.

Auburn’s interest in supporting the team has grown over the last two seasons thanks to Hugh Freeze’s ability to reel in the best recruits. Once the recruits are on campus and are comfortable, expect Auburn’s home-field advantage to climb and become the venue that was once feared by every visiting opponent.
