By both ESPN’s pass-blocking and run-blocking win rate metrics, the Indianapolis Colts offensive line unit ranks extremely well.

In pass rush win rate, the Colts rank third, winning 74 percent of their matchups in pass protection. In the run game, they rank first, winning 77 percent of those matchups.

In pass protection, if an offensive lineman can maintain his block for at least 2.5 seconds, it is considered a win. In the run game, a win is determined by the blocker’s ability to drive the defender back or maintain/create a running lane, along with not letting their defender make a tackle.

While a lot went wrong this past week against the Green Bay Packers, the offensive line play was one of the few bright spots for the Colts.

In the run game, Jonathan Taylor totaled 103 rushing yards on only 12 attempts. That breaks down to an average of 8.6 yards per attempt. In the pass game, on 37 dropbacks for Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ offensive line was credited with only five pressures.

As a whole, the Colts offense is in search of consistency at the moment, but continued steady play in the trenches will help foster that over time.

Having a strong run game to lean on throughout a game will keep the offense ahead of the sticks and help open up opportunities in the passing game. In the pass game, we all know how important time is for a young quarterback.

By pressure rate and yards per rush, the Colts had a top 10 offensive line unit in 2023. With all five starters returning for this season, expectations were high and so far, this unit has largely met them.
