Indianapolis Colts add familiar kicker to practice squad

The Indianapolis Colts continue to churn the practice squad, announcing on Monday afternoon they are bringing back kicker Spencer Shrader.

The corresponding move to make room for Schrader was releasing cornerback Gregory Junior.

Schrader had been with the Colts in some capacity up until last Tuesday when the team released him from the practice squad in order to sign running back Trent Pennix–who has since been released–while shorthanded at that position with Jonathan Taylor missing practice last week.

The Colts signed Schrader following the 2024 NFL draft as an undrafted rookie out of Notre Dame. He was with the team through offseason programs, training camp, and the preseason, appearing in the first and third games where he made all four extra points and both field goal attempts, including one from over 50 yards.

While Matt Gay worked his way back from hernia surgery, the Colts elevated Shrader for their Week 1 matchup with Houston. In his NFL debut, he made all three extra point attempts and did not attempt a field goal.

As far as we know, the Colts bringing Schrader back doesn’t have anything to do with Gay’s availability.

Following these moves, the Colts practice squad is at full capacity for the time being, although as of Monday evening, they do have two roster spots open on the 53-man after waiving Dallis Flowers and placing Will Fries on injured reserve.

Probably a good idea. I'm never very confident with Matt Gay
